Recovery Month: Walk for Recovery, APPR, Member Spotlight, and More!

SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION'S RECOVERY WALK

On September 5, 2024, peers from across the U.S. came together in Washington, D.C., to celebrate Recovery Month by participating in SAMHSA’s inspiring Walk for Recovery. This year marks the 35th anniversary of Recovery Month, making it a milestone year of reflection, growth, and triumph. The Walk for Recovery, now in its second year, has quickly become a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and the shared journey toward healing. The walk began at Freedom Plaza at 3:00 p.m., with a wave of energy and optimism, as participants made their way to the iconic Sylvan Theater near the Washington Monument. By 3:30 p.m., the air was filled with excitement as attendees gathered to hear powerful messages of hope, independence, and self-determination from leaders in the recovery movement.

ACTION PLANNING FOR PREVENTION AND RECOVERY (APPR)

At Vocal Virginia, we often receive inquiries about how to engage with our Action Planning for Prevention and Recovery (APPR) program. Here’s a straightforward guide to APPR facilitators and trainers, their roles, and how to qualify for training opportunities.

VOCAL VIRIGINIA REGIONAL TRAINING AND NETWORKING EVENTS

Vocal Virginia is proud to announce that we have successfully hosted five regional peer training and networking events over the past year. These gatherings provide peers the chance to come together in support of recovery education and to connect with others in their communities who also experience mental health challenges. Our events have been held in Roanoke, Richmond, Falls Church, and most recently, Harrisonburg and Norfolk, allowing peers to learn, grow, and expand their networks.

On Monday, August 19th, peers from across Region 1 joined Vocal Virginia and the Office of Recovery Services in Harrisonburg at Vito’s Italian Kitchen for an insightful session on Stress First Aid, led by Erin Tucker, a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and Region 1 Recovery Services Oriented Coordinator. Erin’s engaging presentation provided a practical framework for addressing stress, introducing the concept of the Stress Continuum Model. This open-source model offers a common language for recognizing and addressing stress reactions while emphasizing the importance of strengthening existing support systems. The model applies both to work-related and personal stress, and it encourages ongoing self-care.
